WAFR returns to the Broadcasting Studio to send this festive classic by the master of Christmas across the airwaves of the world...

The Chimes: Dickens On Air – A Live Radio Play

It is Christmas 1950 in New York and the actors of WAFR: Playhouse of the Air gather for their annual festive broadcast…There is a new government, a new hope, a new world, so what better than a new play? And there is no better story-teller than Charles Dickens – and there is no better man to keep Christmas than he!

Trotty Veck is a ticket-porter – a man who fetches and carries packages, letters and deliveries for a small sixpence here and there. He doesn’t have much but he is happy, gentle and lives a simple, obedient life. That life is given its order by the sound of the bells of his local church – breakfast, lunch, dinner all from the sound of the bells. He sometimes even hears them speaking to him…

In the run-up to the festive season Trotty falls asleep after a long day’s carrying and delivering. Woken by the church bells, The Chimes, and then summoned up the tower by their mysterious power, he has just one chance to change this world… but will he listen to the bells? The Chimes teach Trotty It’s a Wonderful Life filled with all of the master story-teller’s colourful characters and heart-rending poignancy.

Fresh their hugely popular adaptations of A Christmas Carol and Casablanca, Lighthouse Theatre brings their signature live radio play style to this classic by the most theatrical of authors. There will be jingles, carols, music and – of course – bells!…this show is sure to be fast and funny, inventive and entertaining; but most of all a Christmas treat to reinforce the message of this festive time of the year…

Recommended for ages 10 and above.

Mae’n Nadolig 1950 yn Efrog Newydd, ac mae actorion WAFR: Playhouse of the Air yn ymgynnull ar gyfer eu darllediad Nadoligaidd blynyddol … Mae yna lywodraeth newydd, gobaith newydd, byd newydd, felly beth well na drama newydd?  A does dim adroddwr stori cystal â Charles Dickens – a neb gwell i gadw’r Nadolig nag ef!

Mae Trotty Veck yn gludwr tocynnau – dyn sy’n nôl ac yn cludo nwyddau am chwe cheiniog fach yma ac acw. Does ganddo ddim llawer ond mae’n hapus, yn addfwyn ac yn byw bywyd syml ac ufudd. Rhoddir trefn i’w fywyd gan sŵn clychau ei eglwys leol – mae’n cael ei frecwast, cinio a swper yn ôl sŵn y clychau. Weithiau, mae hyd yn oed yn clywed y clychau’n siarad ag ef…

Ar drothwy’r Ŵyl, mae Trotty yn syrthio i gysgu ar ôl diwrnod hir o waith. Mae’n cael ei ddeffro gan glychau’r eglwys, ‘The Chimes’, ac yn cael ei alw i fyny’r tŵr gan eu grym dirgel. Mae ganddo un cyfle i newid y byd hwn … ond a fydd e’n gwrando ar y clychau. Mae’r Chimes yn dysgu fe bod It’s a Wonderful Life yn llawn cymeriadau lliwgar a dwyster torcalonnus gan yr un sy’n feistr ar adrodd stori.

Yn syth o’i addasiadau hynod boblogaidd o A Christmas Carol a Casablanca, daw Lighthouse Theatre a’i arddull drama radio fyw nodweddiadol i’r clasur hwn gan yr awdur mwyaf theatrig ohonyn nhw i gyd. Bydd yna jinglau, carolau, cerddoriaeth ac – wrth gwrs – glychau! Mae’r sioe hon yn siŵr o fod yn gyflym ac yn ddoniol, yn ddyfeisgar ac yn ddifyr; ond yn fwy na dim, yn wledd Nadoligaidd i atgyfnerthu neges yr adeg yma o’r flwyddyn…

Argymhellir eich bod yn 10 oed a hŷn i wylio’r sioe.
